The Pove estate
The Pove estate covers a little more than 20 hectares on the territory of two municipalities. The larger part, where our farm is, is located near the town of Buje, one of the best areas in Istria for wine and olive growing. A smaller part is located in the area of Oprtalj, a picturesque town located in the central part of northern Istria.
The olive groves are mostly planted on flysch soil (known as “the white soil”), rich in limestone, with alkaline reaction that provides a very good water retention capacity. Such soil allows us to grow olives without irrigation and gives a specific olive oil with a pronounced character. The fragmentation of plots, characteristic of hilly areas, helps to maintain biodiversity within olive groves, which is very important for environmentally friendly production.
Harvesting
We harvest olives by machine wherever the slope of the terrain allows, which, we proudly point out, is a novelty in our area. Thanks to the speed and large quantities of harvested fruit provided by machine harvesting, the harvested olives remain almost intact and thus avoid unwanted oxidation that can later affect the stability of the oil.
On steeper slopes and terraces with our centuries-old olive trees of our ancestors, we pick olives by hand. These are special times of the year when family members gather and help us harvest the fruits of the year-round effort.
